Cobourg
is a lovely town with a population of slightly over 19,000 people on
the
shores of Lake Ontario. Around 60 Miles (100 kilometers) from
Toronto, Cobourg is a fine example of Victorian Architecture with
one of the Finest
examples of a Victorian Town hall in Canada.
|
|
|
|
 |
|
Victoria Hall is a gem to behold and is perhaps 50 yards from The
"Mansions on George".
In turn, Victoria Hall is a few steps from Cobourg Harbour and
Marina with it's many boat slips for residents & visitors alike.

The envy of boaters everywhere, the Cobourg
Marina is, without a doubt, one of the finest facilities on Lake Ontario.
Only two short blocks from the downtown, the Marina is within easy walking
distance to the main street shops, restaurants and businesses.
The Harbour has seen radical change in the last two decades,
moving from a functioning Port to a Tourist attraction, with Condominiums
being built in this area also. There is an outdoor artificial skating rink
on the Harbour for the Winter Months. Prices for many of these Condominium units, at the time
of writing, range up $725,000.00 plus and Cobourg seems likely to be the Central
Southern Ontario equivalent of Niagara on the Lake.
The Olde Cobourg Jail which was a functioning Prison until 1999 is now a Museum, Restaurant &
Hotel with a Country Inn charm.
The King George Inn has
also added a luxurious Spa to it's
facilities known as
Heaven on Earth Spa & Wellness Center and is building a Banquet Hall & Convention
Center to compliment the beautiful downtown. The Main Street on which
Victoria Hall is situated is King Street (Highway #2) and
many of its buildings date back to the Mid Nineteenth Century. It is one of
the finest examples of a Victorian Streetscape to be found and compliments
it's sister town -
Port Hope - 5 Miles to The West.

Cobourg
is approximately 45 minutes by Road (Highway 401) from Belleville and the
Bay of Quinte which in turn is 45 minutes from Kingston the original
Capital of Ontario. The area is well known as "The Loyalist Trail", so
called from "The Empire Loyalists" who came North to Upper Canada after
the American Revolution in 1776. It is steeped in history with many cute
tourist areas and towns to visit. The Town is served by VIA Rail, &
some
residents commute by train to Toronto Daily, and in turn the Railway brings
Tourists to our Door.
Cobourg is a cultured Town with many Arts & Cultural Activities. The
birthplace of Marie Dressler, an early "Moving Picture" pioneer actress,
it is positioning itself as Ontario's "Feel Good Town" with many Spas and
Wellness Centers open & being built. A Brand New Hospital opened in late
2003 and Cobourg has also become the business & shopping hub for the
immediate Hinterland. Wal-Mart, Zellers, Home Depot, Canadian Tire etc. are here
together with an
enclosed Shopping Mall, "The Northumberland Mall", housing a
multitude of Stores.

 |
|
|
|
Restaurants abound, both in the
Historic Downtown, & elsewhere. The Town is served by several Hotels with
"The King George Inn" at "The Historic Cobourg Jail" on the Harbour, "The
Breakers" is on the Beach and The Comfort Inn and a Best Western
hotel just by Highway 401.
Demographically the town is profoundly
Anglo - Saxon, in keeping with it's Roots, and is twinned with "Coburg" in
Germany and has some considerable connections. The Town is an ideal place
to work and Play, there is something for everyone, both Young and Old alike. A fine Retirement Community and a safe place to bring up Children.
There are two local newspapers, which are Community orientated, but, of
course, the Main Canadian Newspapers cover the greater world. It is close
enough to visit Toronto with a one hour drive and easy enough to escape
The Big City when you feel the Urge. Quaint, Cozy, Comfortable, Friendly,
very much a part of old Canada in simpler times, yet up to date in the
Twenty First Century. A short sailboat ride to Rochester New York, there
is even talk of reinstating the Ferry Boat service that once existed between the
two Communities.
|
|
Community activities include an Annual Highland Games,
The Waterfront Festival and The Christmas Parade of Lights.
Steeped in its Loyalist past, Cobourg offers
visitors a wide variety of recreational and cultural opportunities.
Located just one hour east of Toronto, Cobourg is a great place to spend a
day, a weekend or the rest of your life!

When you are here, you will want to enjoy all the beauty that Cobourg has
to offer. From the stately "turn-of-the century" homes, on tree-lined streets,
to Victoria Park with its groomed white sandy Beach and walking paths to
shopping and dining in quaint eateries and stores, we are sure you will
feel at home here.

Cobourg's lifestyle is relaxed and friendly and the community spirit
genuine and warm. We hope you enjoy your visit to our great town and that
you will never leave.

Summer is a time to kick back at the beach and
cool off in Lake Ontario. Cobourg's spectacular white sandy beach is just
the place. Fun, frolic and simple relaxation draw thousands of visitors to
its shore each year. Bask in the warmth of the sunshine and soak up the
scenery. Float in the cool, clear water. Stroll along the rippled sand
while the kids build sand-castles.
-
Safe and sandy. Cobourg's
beach is fun for the whole family. Lifeguards are on duty throughout
July and August. The outdoor Centennial Pool is also located nearby,
complete with a water slide and diving board.
-
Paddle the day away. You
can canoe and kayak along the shore, windsurf, sail or bring your dinghy.
-
Splish, splash...the kids
will love the splash pad in nearby Victoria Park and the playground
slides and monkey bars.
-
Score big with the kids.
There's Mini Golf at the Beach and a well-stocked canteen for sodas and
ice cream.
-
On
the Waterfront Park we now have an artificial Skating Rink open December
to March. Big with the kids and Adults alike.
